The Meridian Library District will be a long-term tenant in a 15,000-square-foot library space within the Orchard Park commercial development. The lease was approved June 15, 2020. The library's plans for the building interior were completed and we collected public input on the library design via online survey and forums in summer 2020.
The overall project schedule for the Orchard Park development was delayed. The COVID-19 pandemic affected some of the developers’ review and permitting timelines, slowed access to materials, and impacted labor. The developers also adjusted plans for the Orchard Park plaza, which includes retail and outdoor space in addition to the library branch.
Construction began in summer 2021, and the Orchard Park developers completed the library exterior in late August 2022. The Meridian Library District's tenant improvements began in late March 2022.
The Orchard Park branch opened on May 1, 2023 at Linder Road and Chinden Boulevard. Our newest branch will bring literary resources and support to residents in a fast-growing and currently underserved area of Meridian. Every space in the branch is designed with accessibility in mind.
Features of the new Orchard Park library will include:
-
A drive-up book return.
-
A 24-hour access point for requested library materials. When patrons place items on hold through the library catalog, they will be able to pick them up at their convenience.
-
A sensory room with gentle lighting and tactile installations to support sensory processing needs. The space will include a window looking into the adjacent program room, allowing individuals who need a break from a group environment to continue watching storytimes and other events.
-
An interactive early learning space designed to support young children as they learn through play.
-
An adaptable learning lab to support literacy and STEAM education for all ages.
